Evaluation „Hausaufgabenhëllef“
(EvaH)
The current research project Evaluation “Hausaufgabenhëllef” (EvaH) analyses the effectiveness of “Hausaufgabenhëllef” (homework help), a tutoring program for children and young people introduced by the government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The EvaH project aims to describe and understand the opportunities and challenges that this initiative represents for the different groups of actors (parents, children, teachers, educators) in terms of its theoretical and practical implementation, but also in terms of the cooperation objective that it implies.

“Hausaufgabenhëllef”: what is it about?
Since the beginning of the school year in September 2022, the homework support scheme “Hausaufgabenhëllef” allows children enrolled in a Luxembourgish school to have access to a dedicated quiet time to do their homework in the childcare and education services (SEAS), in the maisons relais or in the homes of parental assistants. This initiative was made possible by the introduction of an electronic textbook (e-bichelchen) filled in by teachers and accessible to SEAS staff, parents and children.
Through this programme, the government aims to improve children’s educational practices regarding homework and to strengthen cooperation between the various actors involved in children’s education (youth workers, teachers, parents).
The objective of the help with homework program is to support families and children in developing effective and autonomous educational practices in order to reduce social and educational inequalities.
The EvaH project: evaluating the “Hausaufgabenhëllef” support scheme
Evaluation “Hausaufgabenhëllef’ (EvaH) is a research project is carried out at the University of Luxembourg’s Centre for Childhood and Youth (CCY), in cooperation with the Observatoire national de l’enfance, de la jeunesse et de la qualité scolaire (OEJQS).
The EvaH project aims to analyse and evaluate the implementation of the homework help programme. The aim is to describe and understand the perspective of the different actors involved.
The methodological approach of the evaluation project
The research carried out within the CCY is divided into two studies and is based on a mixed research method:
- Qualitative research through ethnography and focus groups: an exploratory survey through focus groups with a sample of the different participants of the programme (youth workers, teachers, parents, children).
- Quantitative research through an online survey: an online questionnaire survey of the target population.
Funding
This research is funded by and conducted in cooperation with the Observatoire national de l’enfance, de la jeunesse et de la qualité scolaire (OEJQS) until 2025.
